Jian Zhan Shop

Jian Zhan Shop trades out of Tiedong District Jinglan Pottery Studio in Anshan, Liaoning, a ten-person workshop established in 2022 to make and sell Jianzhan — the tenmoku-glazed tea vessels that trace back to Jianyang, Fujian, during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD), where they were prized enough to be favored by emperors and Zen monks for their oil-spot and hare's-fur glaze patterns. The studio follows the traditional process: high-quality iron-rich clay is thrown on the wheel, then fired — sometimes multiple times — in wood-burning kilns reaching around 1300°C, where a controlled reduction atmosphere reacts with the iron in the clay to produce the glaze's distinctive shifting luster. The studio works with recognized master artisans who carry techniques passed down through generations, and pieces are inspected individually, since kiln variation means no two bowls come out with identical glaze patterns even from the same firing. The stated aim is to bridge an eight-century-old form with a contemporary market — bringing genuine Jianzhan teacups, teapots and tea bowls to tea drinkers outside China rather than mass-produced imitations of the glaze effect. Pieces ship internationally from the Anshan studio, priced from roughly $51 to $185 AUD, each one a one-of-a-kind result of its own firing.
