Heizi Jian Zhan (黑子建盏)

Nanping / China

📍 18 Taqian Road, Jianyang District, Nanping, Fujian, China

What Heizi Jian Zhan (黑子建盏) is known for

Led by master craftsman Zhan Yanfu, honored in 1998 as a Fujian "Eight Min Outstanding Talent," this Jianyang, Nanping studio revives Song-dynasty jianzhan tea bowls in hare's-fur, jade-hair and starlight glazes, giving each piece a numbered authentication code for collectors.

Heizi Jian Zhan is built around the work of master craftsman Zhan Yanfu, who began engaging with kiln culture in 1979 and moved into jianzhan production specifically in 1995, work recognized in 1998 when the Fujian provincial government named him an "Eight Min Outstanding Talent." The studio, formally registered as South Ping Heizi Jian Zhan Cultural Dissemination Company, is based in Jianyang district, Nanping, Fujian - the historical home of jianzhan, the black-glazed tea bowls first fired during the Song dynasty and closely tied to that era's whipped-tea ceremony, where the bowl's glaze was meant to set off the pale froth of the tea itself. The house reproduces the style's signature glaze effects, including gold-thread hare's fur, jade hair, emerald feather, harvest patterns, moon-white, and the rarer starlight (yaobian) finish, each the product of controlled but unpredictable kiln chemistry rather than painted decoration. For collectors, the studio runs a "one bowl, one number" system, assigning each finished piece an individual authentication code so its origin and, over time, its market history can be tracked - a modern traceability layer laid onto a revival of an 800-year-old ceramic form. Beyond jianzhan itself, the studio also deals in calligraphy, antiquities and other decorative arts, positioning itself within a broader Chinese collecting culture rather than as a single-product workshop.
