What Kannauj Attar is known for

Kannauj Attar traces its lineage to 1872, when Guljari Lal Tripathi began distilling attars as a small family enterprise in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh — the Ganga-Kali confluence town whose perfume trade is recorded back to the seventh-century reign of Harshavardhana and drew Mughal patronage under Jahangir and Noor Jahan.

The Tripathi family's fifth generation, led today by Abhishek Tripathi and Devanshi Mishra, formalized the business as Ancient Fragrances Private Limited in 2020 while keeping production on the deg-bhapka method: fragrant steam from a wood- or cow-dung-fired copper still travels through bamboo pipes into submerged condenser pots, where it infuses sandalwood oil — a technique the house's own account describes as predating Grasse's perfume industry. Kannauj's attar tradition received Geographical Indication protection in 2014, formally recognizing the deg-bhapka craft as regional heritage. The house now ships natural attars, essential oils, and alcohol-free perfumes to more than fifty countries from the same town its founder worked in over 150 years ago, trading through a live e-commerce site rather than a single shopfront.
