Run by the Yoshioka Jin Shoten shibori workshop, which has produced shibori on the site since 1940, the Kyoto Shibori Museum opened in 2001 as Japan's only museum devoted specifically to shibori resist-dyeing. It pairs rotating exhibitions with a retail shop and hands-on dyeing classes.
The Kyoto Shibori Museum sits on ground where shibori has been produced continuously since 1940, under the Yoshioka Jin Shoten workshop. The museum itself opened in 2001, built specifically to showcase the technique, and describes itself as the only museum in Japan dedicated to shibori.
Exhibitions rotate several times a year, displaying finished works and the traditional tools used across the shibori process — the resist-dyeing method that produces shibori's characteristic bound, stitched or folded patterning. The museum has also begun exhibiting internationally, part of a stated effort to promote the technique beyond Japan.
Visitors can take a shibori class on-site, with class participants receiving free museum admission as part of the experience, and shop for shibori-dyed textiles and traditional tools both in the attached shop and through the museum's online store.
