Le Chai de Cilaos

Le Chai de Cilaos occupies a genuinely unusual position for a French vineyard: inside the Cirque de Cilaos, a volcanic amphitheater on Réunion Island reached by one of the island's most dramatic mountain roads, ringed by peaks approaching 3,000 metres. That makes it, by the winery's own account, the highest and southernmost vineyard in France — a claim rooted in geography rather than marketing.

The estate has been through a revival: a couple of winemakers took on the project to relaunch production at the chai, rebuilding a winemaking operation on an island better known for rum than wine. The result is a small but distinct range — dry white, sweet white, rosé, grape juice, and Goutali, a local specialty — described as carrying sunny, floral aromas shaped by the volcanic terroir and altitude.

Visits center on a guided cellar tour, walking through both the vineyard and the vinification process rather than just a tasting counter, with the drive up through the cirque itself counted among Réunion's classic scenic routes. It's less a conventional winery stop than a chance to see viticulture pushed into conditions — altitude, isolation, volcanic soil — that would rule it out almost anywhere else in France.
