Lillie Ceramics

Lillie Ceramics was founded in 2017 by Swedish sisters Jenny and Lonny Lillie, who set up a combined workshop and shop in Armazém do Mercado, a building just behind Funchal's Mercado dos Lavradores farmers' market, at Rua Latino Coelho 39. The studio operates as a working atelier open to visitors rather than a pure retail storefront: customers can watch the sisters throwing pots on the wheel and hand-painting finished pieces in the same space where the ceramics are sold. Most pieces are wheel-thrown, with some shaped using slab-building techniques, and every item is individually hand-painted rather than transfer-printed, meaning no two pieces are identical. The decoration draws directly on Madeira's landscape and culture -- recurring motifs include the island's subtropical flora, sardines, fig-harvest imagery, and magnolias, organized into named collections such as Ocean of Blue, Sunset, African Lily and Bird of Paradise. The ware is made to be used rather than purely decorative, built to withstand dishwashers and microwaves. Demand has grown enough that the studio has stopped taking online orders and now sells primarily to in-person visitors to the Funchal workshop, treating the space more as a small working gallery than a shippable retail operation.
