What Lukullus is known for
Founded in 1946 by Jan Dynowski in Warsaw's Praga district, Lukullus has baked cakes, tortes and pastries from home recipes ever since, switching to all-butter production in 2006. Its counters now reach shopping centers across the city, including Arkadia and Zlote Tarasy.
Cukiernia Lukullus traces back to 1946, when Jan Dynowski opened a confectionery on Warsaw's Praga side, a working-class district on the Vistula's right bank that survived the war's destruction better than the city center. The bakery built its name on traditional Polish cakes, tortes and pastries made to home recipes, without preservatives, flavor enhancers or artificial semi-finished ingredients.
In 2006 the bakery committed to baking exclusively with butter rather than margarine or shortening — a deliberate return to older methods that the business still markets as a point of pride. That craft focus helped it expand well beyond its Praga roots: Lukullus now runs sales points inside several of Warsaw's major shopping centers, among them Arkadia, Zlote Tarasy, Promenada and the Warszawa Wilenska complex, with production centralized at a facility on ulica Lisowska.
Eighty years on, the business remains identified with its founding family's name and its original Praga neighborhood, even as its reach has grown citywide.
