What Luxardo is known for

Maraschino liqueur maker founded 1821 by Girolamo Luxardo in Zara (then Austrian-ruled Dalmatia); relocated to Torreglia, Veneto, in 1947 after WWII. Still entirely family-owned into a seventh generation; exports to more than 86 countries.

Luxardo was established in 1821 by Girolamo Luxardo in Zara, then part of the Austrian Empire (now Zadar, Croatia), and remains entirely controlled by the founding family two centuries later. After the Second World War, the company relocated across the Adriatic to Torreglia, in the Veneto region near Padua. Luxardo is best known for its original maraschino liqueur and candied maraschino cherries, made from the marasca cherry, and the company maintains its own marasca orchards alongside traditional copper pot stills and aging vats. Beyond maraschino, Luxardo produces limoncello, sambuca, amaretto, gin, and bitters. Three generations currently work in the business together, with a seventh generation now involved.

Best for — Maraschino and real cocktail cherries.
