What Marina Rinaldi is known for

Launched in 1980 within the Max Mara Group by Achille Maramotti and named for his great-grandmother, Marina Rinaldi was one of the first fashion labels built specifically for women above standard sample sizes, applying the same tailoring, fabric and construction standards as the group's mainline collections.

Marina Rinaldi was created in 1980 by Achille Maramotti, founder of the Max Mara Group, as a dedicated line for women wearing sizes above the standard range then served by mainstream fashion houses — at the time, essentially no established fashion company was designing specifically for this customer. The label is named after Maramotti's great-grandmother. Headquartered, like the rest of the Max Mara Group, in Reggio Emilia, Italy, Marina Rinaldi's founding premise was that larger-size dressing should not mean lower design ambition: garments were cut, constructed and finished to the same standard as the group's core Max Mara collections, using the same quality of fabric and color development rather than simplified or resized versions of existing patterns. The brand expanded steadily through the 1980s, adding the Persona diffusion line in 1985, Marina Sport in 1986, and a dedicated knitwear line in 1987, building out a fuller wardrobe rather than a single signature silhouette. Decades on, Marina Rinaldi remains part of the privately held Max Mara Group and continues to operate as a distinct label with its own collections, boutiques and e-commerce, sold via marinarinaldi.com and department-store concessions internationally, while sharing the group's Reggio Emilia design and production infrastructure.
