What Markaware is known for
Japanese menswear label launched in 2009 by designer Shunsuke Ishikawa (who started the related MARKA line in 2003) from Nakameguro, Tokyo; sources traceable organic cotton, wool and hemp globally and has natural fabrics woven and sewn in Japan.
Markaware is the higher-end menswear label of Existence Co., Ltd., a Tokyo company based in the Nakameguro neighborhood that also runs the more casual sister label MARKA and the knitwear line Text. Designer Shunsuke Ishikawa started the men's MARKA line in 2003, and Markaware followed in 2009. The brand describes its approach as 'Farm to Closet': Ishikawa travels directly to farms and mills to source traceable natural materials - organic cotton, organic wool, alpaca and hemp - which are then spun, woven and sewn using Japan's textile manufacturing expertise. Since 2018 the brand has used only organic or sustainably grown cotton across its collections.
