What Marttiini is known for

Janne Marttiini, born in 1893 in the Lapland village of Kierinki, was a blacksmith by trade when he set up J. Marttiini's Knife Factory Ltd. on Vartiokatu street in Rovaniemi in 1928. He sold his own knives around the region to support a large family, and as demand grew so did the workshop, drawing steadily on the puukko tradition of Finnish Lapland.
Marttiini turned to export earlier than most Finnish knife makers of its era. Janne made his first trip to the United States in 1952, and his son Toivo Marttiini built on that opening by cultivating direct customer relationships in export markets. An American inquiry about filleting knives grew into substantial export volume through the 1960s, and in 1967 the Finnish President recognized the company's export record with a national award.
The firm still operates from Rovaniemi today, making hunting, fishing, filleting, kitchen, folding and traditional puukko knives alongside contemporary design pieces. Its factory shop sells the full catalogue plus factory seconds, offers free blade engraving on knives ordered there, and backs its knives with a three-year warranty.
