What Matt's BBQ Tacos is known for
Tex-Mex breakfast-taco cart opened in March 2019 by pitmaster Matt Vicedomini as a spin-off of his original Matt's BBQ cart, on SE Hawthorne Blvd; smokes meat and presses fresh tortillas on-site daily for tacos modeled on Austin-style breakfast tacos.
Matt Vicedomini opened his first food cart, Matt's BBQ, on NE Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in 2015. He opened a second cart on March 8, 2019 — at 3207 SE Hawthorne Boulevard, the former site of the Fried Egg I'm in Love cart — dedicated specifically to Tex-Mex breakfast tacos filled with his barbecue, calling it Matt's BBQ Tacos. The concept came out of research trips to Austin, Texas, where Vicedomini ate breakfast tacos and worked out how to adapt the format around his own smoked meats: 'Taking things I've eaten in Austin and bringing them back up here, and obviously putting our BBQ in them,' as he described it. The cart makes its tortillas fresh on-site every day and runs its own smokers rather than trucking in meat from the original Matt's BBQ location, and serves breakfast tacos throughout the day rather than only in the morning. The Oregonian named the original Matt's BBQ Cart of the Year in 2019, and Matt's BBQ Tacos has since been included in The Infatuation's list of Portland's best restaurants and was a 2025 Best of Portland finalist for Best Taco.
