What Nasomatto is known for

Niche perfume house founded in 2007 by Puglia-born perfumer Alessandro Gualtieri, formerly a nose for Fendi, Versace, Helmut Lang and Diesel. Its 2009 release Black Afgano, an oud-based scent, became a cult bestseller that regularly sells out.

Nasomatto was founded in 2007 by Alessandro Gualtieri, an Italian perfumer whose name for the brand — meaning roughly "crazy nose" — reflects his reputation for unconventional, high-concentration compositions built outside mainstream perfume-industry conventions. Before starting Nasomatto, Gualtieri worked as a perfumer for major fashion houses including Fendi, Versace, Helmut Lang, and Diesel, developing commercial fragrances before setting out to create work under his own name with fewer commercial constraints. The brand's first release, in 2007, was a set of five fragrances — Hindu Grass, Duro, Narcotic Venus, Silver Musk, and Absinth — establishing Nasomatto's identity around dense, high-concentration extraits rather than lighter eau de toilette formulations. Its best-known creation, Black Afgano, followed in 2009 after roughly six years of development; built around oud and cannabis-adjacent facets, it became one of the more talked-about niche fragrances of the following decade and has developed a reputation, reported in trade and enthusiast press, for selling out quickly whenever new stock arrives at retailers. Gualtieri has continued to operate Nasomatto as an independent house rather than selling to a larger beauty group, and interviews describe him working from a studio in Amsterdam, where he is based.
