Antica Farmacia Pesci opened in 1552 as a spezieria (apothecary), founded at the pope's behest to distribute medicines to the poor of the neighborhood, and is credited as the oldest pharmacy in Rome. It was established by Andrea and Vincenzo Pesci before management passed to the Del Monaco family. Its location has moved twice: originally sited opposite the Acqua Vergine fountain in 1552, it relocated to Piazza Trevi in 1609, and moved into its current premises in 1911 - the ground floor of the nineteenth-century Palazzo Castellani at Piazza di Trevi 89, a few steps from the Trevi Fountain. The pharmacy has preserved its historic interior: dark wood cabinetry lined with antique boxes and jars, and a mortar dated to the shop's founding year of 1552.
