OotyMade was started in 2012 by Vijay, a Nilgiris native who founded the business after repeatedly being asked by colleagues for authentic Ooty products instead of the imitation versions sold in other cities - a gap he set out to close by building what the company describes as India's first dedicated online store for genuine Nilgiris goods, without outside investors. That authenticity claim now carries real institutional backing: the company holds DPIIT (Startup India) recognition, Startup Tamil Nadu status, UDYAM MSME registration, FSSAI food-safety certification and standard GST registration - a fuller regulatory footprint than most small regional food sellers document. Its signature product is Ooty Varkey, a firewood-baked biscuit that carries a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, meaning it's legally recognized as tied to this specific place and method rather than a generic recipe. Around that anchor product sits handmade chocolate in dark, milk and white styles, single-estate Nilgiri teas including flavored options, Nilgiri and eucalyptus essential oils, and handmade soaps, all described as sourced directly from local artisans rather than resold from a wholesaler. OotyMade reports more than 300,000 orders since it started and sells through its own site as well as Amazon, Flipkart and IndiaMART - a decade-plus track record built specifically around proving Nilgiris provenance.
