Open Book Coffee

Open Book Coffee runs its two identities in the same room on Strawberry Hill Street: a bookstore stocked with Atlantic Canadian titles from a dozen independent local publishers, including Nimbus Publishing, and a coffee bar pouring exclusively Laughing Whale Coffee -- Certified Fairtrade organic beans roasted in small batches in Nova Scotia.

The pairing is deliberate rather than incidental. Neither side is a sideline to the other: the shop's stated focus is a comprehensive regional collection rather than bestseller racks, and its coffee sourcing is narrowed to a single certified roaster instead of a rotating list. That gives the shop a tighter identity than a general cafe-with-books setup.

The space also functions as a small venue, hosting book launches, readings and signings alongside house concerts -- events that lean on the room's dual purpose rather than treating either the books or the coffee as backdrop. An acknowledgment of Mi'kma'ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq People, appears on the site as part of how the shop frames its place in Halifax.
