What Panerai is known for
Florentine dive-watch legend born supplying the Italian Navy — Luminor crowns and Radiomir heritage. First civilian collection only in 1993 (three limited editions: Luminor, Luminor Marina, Mare Nostrum); earlier watches were military/Navy instruments.
Giovanni Panerai opened Florence's first watch shop in 1860 on the Ponte alle Grazie, part boutique, part school, part workshop — and the house's destiny arrived by government contract. The Royal Italian Navy needed instruments its frogmen could read in black water; Panerai answered with Radiomir, the radium-based luminous compound patented in 1916, and then the watch that carried its name: cushion-cased, wire-lugged, built with Rolex movements, issued to commando divers of the Decima MAS in the late 1930s.
The Luminor followed — safer tritium lume and the crown-protecting bridge device that remains the most recognizable silhouette in dive watching. For decades the watches were military secrets; civilians got them only from 1993, and Sylvester Stallone's on-screen adoption lit the fuse.
Richemont acquired the house in 1997 and built it into a manufacture in Neuchâtel, but the identity never left Florence — the Piazza San Giovanni boutique stands minutes from the original shop. Italian design, Swiss engineering, and history you can read in the dark.
