Penylan Pantry

Penylan Pantry was opened in December 2013 by friends Melissa Boothman and Jolene, who set out to build a Cardiff shop that could showcase strong produce from Wales and the rest of Britain rather than stock a generic grocery range. Their stated ethos centers on keeping food miles low, buying from local producers to support the local economy, and running the shop toward a 95 percent recyclable-waste target. That approach has been recognized locally: the pantry has won a Cardiff Life award for Best Cafe and been runner-up three years running in the Observer Food Awards Wales, across the Best Ethical Retailer, Best Cheap Eats and Best Independent Retailer categories. The shop sells Welsh and regional cheeses, charcuterie, fresh bread, wine and store-cupboard staples from its Kimberley Road corner site, with a cafe counter serving coffee and seasonal plates, and builds custom hampers from the same local range for gifting. More than a decade after opening, it functions as both a neighbourhood grocer for Penylan residents and a small showcase for Welsh food producers who might not otherwise have a Cardiff shopfront, run to the same two-founder, sustainability-first model it started with.
