Pillivuyt was founded in 1818 by Jean Louis Richard Pillivuyt, who was born in Yverdon, Switzerland, and naturalized as a French citizen in 1825. Production began in Foecy, in the Cher department, and won an early medal in New York in 1823. His son Charles, born in 1810, became a partner in 1830 and in 1853-54 built a new, much larger factory in Mehun-sur-Yevre, eventually employing 1,200-1,400 workers across six kilns with steam-powered machinery. Pillivuyt has specialized throughout its history in dense, durable porcelain suited to heavy restaurant and hotel use as much as home tables. In 2009, the company received France's Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label.
