What Royal Mer is known for

Breton knitwear maker founded 1946 in La Regrippiere, Loire-Atlantique, when Marie-Louise Soulard began knitting sailor sweaters; joined by her son in 1957, the workshop now turns out roughly 80,000 pieces a year.

Royal Mer began in 1946 in the Nantes region of France, when Marie-Louise Soulard started knitting sweaters for local residents, producing around fifteen a week by hand. Her son joined the business in 1957, and together, under the name Royal Mer Bretagne, they scaled the operation - by 1975 the company employed more than a hundred people. The workshop, still located in La Regrippiere in the Loire-Atlantique department, now covers about 6,000 square meters and produces roughly 80,000 knitwear pieces a year, including the sailor-style sweaters the brand became known for.
