What Sam Berg is known for
Samuel Berg opened this Grimstad bakery in 1924; three generations later, Sam Berg Nærbakst bakes more than 25 bread varieties daily, including the signature Grimstadbrødet, plus custom celebration cakes. It now also serves Arendal and supplies regional grocers and hotels.
Samuel Berg opened the first Sam Berg bakery in Grimstad, on Norway's southern coast, in 1924. The business has stayed in family hands through three generations since, evolving from a single neighborhood bakery into a modern artisanal operation registered today as Sam Berg Naerbakst AS.
The bakery's daily output runs to more than 25 bread varieties, headlined by its own Grimstadbrodet, alongside homemade crackers and a full line of custom celebration cakes made to order. A second retail location now serves the nearby town of Arendal, and beyond its own shop counters, Sam Berg supplies bread and baked goods wholesale to grocery stores, canteens and hotels across the region.
A century after Samuel Berg's first loaves, the company still frames its identity around local tradition and knowledge passed down through the family, even as its customer base has grown well past its original Grimstad neighborhood.
