San Juan Island Roasters

Front Street, Friday Harbor

What San Juan Island Roasters is known for

A waterfront shop on Front Street that roasts its coffee on-island and pours it at a full coffee bar with outdoor seating. Whole beans are sold in-store and shipped online.

San Juan Island Roasters is Friday Harbor's original coffee shop and small-batch roastery, open since 1990 and the longest continuously running coffee business on San Juan Island. It occupies a waterfront spot in the Cannery Landing building near the ferry dock, roasting its own coffee on-island rather than importing pre-roasted beans, and pouring it at a full espresso bar with outdoor seating overlooking the harbor. Beyond coffee, the shop sells artisan chocolates, ice cream, logo merchandise, and more than 15 varieties of island-roasted beans for home brewing, sold both in-store and shipped online. Ownership passed in 2022 from longtime owners Steve and Irene Herring to Mary and Evan Perrollaz, who had been regular customers of the shop before taking it over — a continuity-minded handover rather than a change in concept or brand. As one of the few roasteries actually located on San Juan Island rather than shipping in beans from the mainland, it holds a specific niche for visitors arriving by ferry: a waterfront-adjacent stop that roasts what it sells rather than functioning purely as a cafe reselling someone else's beans.
