Sonder

Belgrade

What Sonder is known for

Sonder is a Belgrade specialty-coffee roaster and cafe that roasts beans in small batches for filter and espresso. Its minimalist bar helped anchor the city's third-wave coffee scene, pouring and selling its own roasts.

Sonder was founded by Klim Zukov and Jevgenija Tolmaceva, hospitality entrepreneurs from Saint Petersburg who opened the flagship Vracar location on Baba Visnjina Street with an unusually wide brief for a coffee roastery. The space spans five dining rooms across three levels, done in a Scandinavian-leaning interior of blue accents, vintage furniture, and retro artwork, with an internal courtyard for summer seating and a Japanese garden tucked into the property. A dedicated roasting area anchors the concept, turning out small-batch beans for filter and espresso that helped anchor Belgrade's third-wave coffee scene as it built momentum through the 2010s, but the menu runs well past coffee -- an extensive wine list, breakfast built around egg dishes, vegan oatmeal and French toast, and dinner service with beef tartare, schnitzel, and fish. Sonder has since expanded to additional Belgrade locations in Dorcol, Gastrosor, and along the Waterfront, each carrying the same roastery-plus-kitchen format rather than functioning as a satellite cafe. The combination of serious in-house roasting with a full-day restaurant program, inside a deliberately designed space, set Sonder apart from the espresso-bar model most of Belgrade's early specialty-coffee wave followed.
