Superdawg

Superdawg was opened in May 1948 by Maurie Berman, a recently returned World War II veteran and accounting student, and his wife Flaurie, a public school teacher, at the corner of Milwaukee, Devon and Nagle Avenues in Chicago. Like many other returning GIs who opened roadside hot dog stands, the Bermans wanted something distinctive: a 12-by-20-foot stand topped with two giant anthropomorphic hot dog figures. Flaurie became the drive-in's first carhop, taking orders over a speaker system that let customers order from their cars - a service the restaurant still runs today, with carhops delivering trays directly to parked vehicles. Originally a seasonal, summer-only operation, Superdawg proved popular enough in its first three years that the Bermans switched to year-round operation. The restaurant remains in the Norwood Park neighborhood at its original 1948 location.
