Thuy Design House

Ho Chi Minh City

What Thuy Design House is known for

Ho Chi Minh City atelier founded 2011 by artist-designer Thuy Nguyen, who trained at Hanoi's Vietnam University of Fine Art and holds a PhD from Kyiv's fine-art academy; reworks brocade and silk techniques into contemporary fashion.

Thuy Design House was founded in 2011 by Thuy Nguyen, a Vietnamese artist and fashion designer educated at the Vietnam University of Fine Art in Hanoi, who went on to earn a doctorate in fine art from the National Academy of Fine Art and Architecture in Kyiv, Ukraine. The label's guiding idea is translating traditional Vietnamese textile handicraft - brocade weaving and silk work among them - into contemporary garment design, rather than treating those techniques as purely decorative or archival.

Nguyen's work extends beyond the clothing line itself. She produced and directed the film "The Tailor," which uses the ao dai, Vietnam's traditional dress, as a lens for exploring Vietnamese cultural identity and its collision with modern life. She also founded The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre in Ho Chi Minh City, a space dedicated to contemporary Vietnamese art, which operates alongside her fashion practice rather than as a side project. Thuy Design House's collections have been shown at Vietnam International Fashion Week and worn by figures in Vietnamese entertainment and media, part of a broader push - shared with other Vietnamese designers of her generation - to position Vietnamese craft techniques within international, rather than purely folkloric or tourist-facing, fashion contexts.
