What William Penn is known for

Founded in Bangalore in 2002 by Nikhil Ranjan, William Penn grew from one Koramangala store into India's largest fine-writing-instrument chain, with 26-plus stores nationwide. It carries Montblanc, Lamy, Cross, Parker and Sheaffer, a brand it later acquired outright.

William Penn was founded in 2002 by Nikhil Ranjan, a Mysuru engineering graduate and former IBM employee, who opened the company's first store in a walk-through stationery format in Koramangala, Bangalore. It was, by its own account, the first multi-brand retailer in India dedicated to fine writing instruments, at a time when premium pen brands had little organized retail presence in the country.

From that single Bangalore location, the chain expanded into cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and Kochi, growing to more than 26 stores and, according to retail press coverage, becoming India's largest fine-writing-instrument chain. Its current storefront lists roughly two dozen brands on offer, among them Montblanc, Lamy, Sheaffer, Cross, Parker, Waterman, Caran d'Ache, Sailor and Pilot, alongside notebooks, leather accessories and gifting items.

William Penn's role in the category shifted from retailer to owner in later years: press coverage reports that the company purchased the American pen brand Sheaffer outright, moving it from a stocked brand to one it now controls. Trade press has also reported the company crossing roughly Rs 95 crore in annual revenue as it diversified beyond classic fountain pens into smart pens, smart wallets and other accessories. Named after the founder of Pennsylvania, the company has built its identity around being India's dedicated destination for fine writing and gifting rather than a general stationery outlet.
