What Yamamay is known for

Founded in 2001 by Gianluigi Cimmino, whose family had already built the Original Marines clothing chain; first store opened in Busto Arsizio, Lombardy; the name comes from Yamamai, a Japanese silk moth.

Yamamay was founded in 2001 by Gianluigi Cimmino, part of the Cimmino family that had already built the Original Marines clothing chain through his father, Luciano Cimmino. The first store opened in September 2001 in Busto Arsizio, in Lombardy's Varese province, part of northern Italy's historic textile manufacturing district; the company is headquartered nearby in Gallarate. The brand name comes from Yamamai, a species of Japanese silk moth, a reference meant to evoke both craftsmanship and the softness of the fabrics used in its underwear and swimwear lines. Yamamay operates under the holding company Inticom S.p.A., where Luciano Cimmino's daughter Barbara Cimmino founded the brand's internal training school, Yamacademy, and her husband Francesco Pinto, a former Procter & Gamble manager, chairs the parent company. The brand has grown into one of Italy's larger intimate-apparel retailers, selling underwear, lingerie, swimwear, and loungewear for both women and men across Italy and internationally.
