Batik Betawi Terogong

Batik Betawi Terogong was founded on 5 September 2012, when Laela and a group of Betawi families set out to keep the culture of the indigenous Jakarta community alive inside an increasingly cosmopolitan city. They chose Terogong, a kampung within Cilandak Barat in South Jakarta still home to a Betawi-majority population, and worked to re-establish it as a dedicated batik village rather than start the craft elsewhere from scratch.

The sanggar teaches and produces both hand-drawn batik tulis and stamped batik cap, developing motifs meant to read as distinctly Jakartan rather than borrowing from the better-known batik centers of Java's north coast. Its stated goals, per its own site, are to preserve batik-making as living heritage, originate Betawi-specific motifs, and give local artisans an economic stake in the craft's survival.

The workshop has drawn official recognition, including visits from Jakarta's deputy governor and the mayor of South Jakarta, coverage on Net TV, and participation in Indonesia's national Batik Day observances. It positions itself explicitly as a tourism destination as well as a workshop, inviting visitors to see and try both batik techniques on site.
