Blain's Farm & Fleet

William Claude Blain and his brother Norman 'Bert' Blain, who already ran a farm-implements and auto-parts business, opened the first Blain's Farm and Fleet in June 1955 in a converted meat market in Janesville, Wisconsin. The store's origin traces to a legal quirk of the period: discounted goods could only legally be sold to other businesses, and anyone owning five or more engines counted as a 'fleet' operator, and therefore a business - a threshold most farmers cleared easily. That workaround is credited as one of the earliest discount-retail formats in the US. From a 1,000-square-foot start, the chain grew into a regional institution now operating around 45 stores across Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and Michigan.
