Bleu de Chauffe

What Bleu de Chauffe is known for

Leather-goods workshop launched 2009 by designer Alexandre Rousseau and Thierry Batteux (from ready-to-wear), based in the Aveyron department of southern France, making vegetable-tanned leather bags inspired by workwear and outdoor gear.

Bleu de Chauffe was founded in 2009 by Alexandre Rousseau, a designer with a background in established leather-goods houses, and Thierry Batteux, who came from the ready-to-wear clothing sector. The pair built the brand around a workwear- and outdoor-inspired aesthetic, taking its name from 'bleu de chauffe' — the blue work overalls historically worn by French laborers and mechanics. The company chose to base manufacturing in the rural Aveyron department, in southern France's Occitanie region, rather than a fashion capital, prioritizing natural materials: vegetable-tanned leather, natural felt, and organic cotton. Having occupied several temporary premises as the business grew, Bleu de Chauffe eventually built its own dedicated workshop, laid out to run production from the reception of raw hides through cutting, stitching and shipping under one roof. The brand's bags — satchels, totes and travel pieces built along rugged, functional lines — are produced by artisans on-site rather than outsourced, and finished pieces are signed by the maker who assembled them, tying the object back to an individual craftsperson.
