Chez Prune has anchored the corner of rue Beaurepaire and the Canal Saint-Martin since 1995. Its owners stripped the space back to the building's original decor, dating to around 1900, and opened a terrace overlooking the canal at a time when the 10th arrondissement was still a mostly overlooked part of Paris. It took a few years to catch on, but the café is now widely credited as one of the businesses that pulled the neighborhood's revival along with it.
The format hasn't changed much since: cheese and meat platters, a seasonal menu, and a Sunday brunch that fills the terrace early. It's since become a fixture of the canal's boho-chic identity — Netflix's "Emily in Paris" has filmed nearby, and the area sits close to locations from the 2001 film "Amélie." None of that has pushed Chez Prune toward reinvention; the appeal is still the same one that worked in the mid-1990s — a terrace on the water, coffee or wine, and a spot to watch the canal go by.
