Chocolateria San Gines

Chocolatería San Ginés opened in December 1894 in a passageway beside the Iglesia de San Ginés, near Puerta del Sol, taking its name from the church next door. From early on it became the after-theatre stop for Madrid's playgoers, who would drop in for hot chocolate and churros once the curtain came down, and that late-night habit is still built into the business today: the café runs 24 hours, so the thick, Spanish-style hot chocolate - made for dipping rather than sipping - is available at any hour, not just breakfast or dessert. The room itself carries the weight of the routine: white marble-topped tables and a tiled counter that have appeared in Spanish literature, including Benito Pérez Galdós's Episodios Nacionales and Ramón del Valle-Inclán's Luces de Bohemia, both citing the café as a real fixture of Madrid life rather than an invented backdrop. That continuity - same passageway, same marble tables, same round-the-clock chocolate and churros - is the core of what draws visitors well past its original theatre-crowd clientele. A neighbouring take-away counter and an online shop now extend the business past the café tables, selling boxed chocolate, truffles and churros to take home, but the counter service in the Pasadizo de San Ginés is still the reason the name is known at all.
