Cofra began in 1938 as Cortelgomma, a workshop founded by Ruggiero Cortellino that made shoes from recycled military truck tyres and surplus uniform fabric. The company took the Cofra name in 1983 under Giuseppe Cortellino, the founder's son, and opened a dedicated safety-footwear division in 1989. In 1997 it became the first Italian footwear manufacturer certified to UNI EN ISO 9001. Cofra is now headquartered on a roughly 60,000-square-metre site in Barletta, Puglia, with an additional manufacturing plant in Albania, and supplies protective boots and workwear to industrial customers across Europe.
