What Desigual is known for

Barcelona fashion label founded in 1984 by Thomas Meyer, who began by patchworking a jacket from second-hand denim scraps in 1983; opened its first store in Ibiza's harbor in 1986, building its identity on print-heavy, patchwork design.

Desigual was founded in 1984 by Thomas Meyer, who was born in Germany, is of Swiss origin, and has lived in Spain since childhood. The brand's origin point was 1983, when Meyer designed a signature jacket patchworked from scraps of second-hand denim - the idea reportedly suggested in part by Spanish filmmaker Isabel Coixet, who is also credited with proposing the Desigual name. In 1986 the company opened its first standalone store in the harbor of Ibiza, debuting a logo depicting a naked man and woman holding hands, designed by artist Peret, alongside the tagline 'no es lo mismo' ('it's not the same'). Meyer relocated to Barcelona in 1992, where the company's first full collections took shape and where it remains headquartered today. In 2011 Desigual began a design collaboration with French couturier Christian Lacroix. The brand is now known internationally for its saturated colors, mixed prints and patchwork silhouettes.
