Etat Libre d'Orange

Etat Libre d'Orange was founded in Paris in 2006 by Etienne de Swardt, who had worked within the traditional perfume industry before starting his own house to break from what he saw as its restrictive conventions. The brand's name references de Swardt's native South African region, the historical Orange Free State, and pairs with the house motto 'le parfum est mort, vive le parfum!' Its fragrances are built around deliberately provocative names, imagery and themes centered on sexuality and eroticism, positioning the brand as a niche disruptor within French perfumery. The house's flagship boutique is at 69 rue des Archives, in the historic Marais district of Paris.
