What Feathered Friends is known for
Seattle down specialist founded 1972 by Carol and Peter Hickner. Sleeping bags and outerwear handcrafted at its SODO factory; retail shop in South Lake Union. Its Eider bag line was developed for the 1990 American K2 expedition.
Feathered Friends began in 1972 when Carol and Peter Hickner started repairing worn-out down sleeping bags in the basement of their Capitol Hill home, then began making their own once they saw the gap in quality. The business grew into expedition-grade gear through the late 1980s; the company's suits and bags have gone to Everest and K2, and its Eider bag line was originally developed for the 1990 American K2 expedition. Feathered Friends adopted Gore-Tex as soon as it became commercially available in 1976. After a period of manufacturing overseas, production returned fully to Seattle. The company operates a factory in the SODO neighborhood and a retail store in South Lake Union.
