Manastash was founded in Seattle in 1993 by Robert Jungmann, who set out to use hemp fabric to reduce fashion's reliance on deforestation-linked materials. The name comes from the Manastash Ridge/Plateau in Washington's Cascade Range. Its Kurtigan jacket became notable after Kurt Cobain wore it on stage. Jungmann later sold the company, and Manastash has been based in Japan since 2005, with collections now designed in Tokyo under the Japanese conglomerate TSI Holdings, blending technical outdoor fabrics with a street-influenced aesthetic.
