Ferragamo

The headquarters is a thirteenth-century palazzo on the Arno, and that is not real-estate vanity — it is autobiography. Salvatore Ferragamo returned from Hollywood in 1927 already famous as shoemaker to the stars, chose Florence for its leather artisans, and eventually installed his house in Palazzo Spini Feroni: a medieval fortress for a craft he had elevated to fortune. The message of the address has never changed — shoes, taken this seriously, deserve a palace.

Hollywood was the founding clientele and the founding legend: Ferragamo fitted the stars before the star system had a name, learning feet the way other designers learned fabric. The lasts he kept — each famous foot recorded in wood — were the archive of an idea: that fit is the true luxury, and beauty that hurts is a failure of craft. From that doctrine came the icons: the Gancini loafer with its hook-shaped hardware, the Vara pump whose grosgrain bow made a mid-heel eternal, wedges and inventions patented along the way.

The making remains where the founder planted it — Tuscan and Campanian workshops, Florentine leather artistry, the full Italian supply chain of skill. And the palazzo remains the pedestal: shop, museum, and headquarters in one, the Arno flowing past as it did when the building was new and shoes were merely necessities. Ferragamo's century-long argument is carved into that stone: footwear is architecture for the body, and Florence is its capital.
