Iron Works Barbecue occupies a building at 100 Red River Street in downtown Austin that was originally the Weigl family's ornamental ironworks and blacksmith tin shop; the structure's slanted old wood floors and industrial fittings remain part of its dining room. The restaurant has operated in the space since 1978, smoking meats low and slow and making its own barbecue sauces and seasonings in-house. Beef ribs are a signature item. The location, a short walk from the Austin Convention Center, has built a following for its combination of old-building character and traditional Central Texas barbecue.
