He launched his own label in 1973, having researched and trained directly under royal batik makers connected to the Surakarta palace.
Tirta is credited with leading batik's design revival through the 1970s and 1980s, elevating a traditional craft into internationally recognized fashion. His work reached its highest public profile in 1994, when he designed the batik shirts worn by attending heads of state at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit held in Indonesia; his clients over the years included Nelson Mandela and Ronald Reagan.
Tirta died in 2010, and the Iwan Tirta Private Collection in Jakarta continues under his name, carrying his royal-court-derived motifs and design philosophy forward as a going concern rather than a museum-only archive.
