Jan Kielman

Jan Kielman left his family home at 18 to move to Warsaw in 1880, initially training in the confectionery trade before switching to shoemaking. After three years he earned the title of master shoemaker and opened his own workshop in 1883, which quickly built a devoted following for its neat, precise construction. The business has always operated from Chmielna Street in central Warsaw, and during the interwar years it took on some of the most prestigious commissions in the city, with clients reported to include President Ignacy Mościcki, General Władysław Sikorski, and performers such as tenor Jan Kiepura and actress Mieczysława Ćwiklińska. Sources associated with the house also mention Charles de Gaulle among its clientele, though this is less independently documented than the Polish figures. Today the workshop continues as a luxury bespoke operation, hand-sewing shoes made entirely to individual measure — one of Warsaw's longest-running shoemaking houses, now well past its 140th year in continuous operation on the same street.
