Koyasan Daisido (高野山大師堂)

Koyasan Daisido trades as a 香老舗 (long-established incense house) from a shop near the entrance to Okuno-in, Mount Kōya's vast cemetery and one of Japanese Buddhism's most sacred pilgrimage sites, standing across the street from the Karukaya-dō hall. The shop's principal product, Kōya Reikō, is an incense stick formulated from natural aromatic materials described in ancient Indian scriptures and finished by hand, one stick at a time; the fragrance is designed to be soft and unobtrusive rather than heavy, matching the contemplative use it's built for rather than a showcase scent. Beyond its own incense line, Koyasan Daisido stocks raw aromatic wood, incense powder (zukō) for purification, burners, and a full range of Buddhist temple supplies — ritual implements for goma fire ceremonies, altar items and religious statuary — selling to both individual pilgrims and temples on a wholesale basis. Mount Kōya itself has functioned as a center of Shingon Buddhist practice for around 1,200 years, and the shop positions its incense as a continuation of that fragrance tradition rather than a separate retail add-on; the current shop building is modern, but the trade it houses is not.
