The brand grew out of a single scent, Mure et Musc, which remains its best-known fragrance today. Its first standalone boutique opened in Paris on Rue de Grenelle in 1979. Laporte left the company in 1982 and went on to found a rival niche house, Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier, in 1988. L'Artisan Parfumeur is based in Paris and today operates internationally through its own boutiques and retail partners.
