Lutz Huelle

What Lutz Huelle is known for

Paris-based label by German designer and Margiela alumnus Lutz Huelle, reworking familiar wardrobe pieces through altered proportions, hybrid construction and relaxed tailoring.

Lutz Huelle was born in 1966 in Remscheid, Germany, and trained at Central Saint Martins in London before working at Maison Martin Margiela, an apprenticeship whose influence on his taste for deconstruction and re-contextualized classics remains visible in his work. In 2000 he founded his eponymous Paris-based label together with David Ballu, who continues as his design partner. The house's guiding idea, which the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode describes as "décontextualisation," reworks familiar wardrobe staples -- trenches, tailoring, eveningwear -- by colliding them with sportswear and workwear references and mixing masculine and feminine codes within a single piece. The label won the ANDAM Fashion Award twice, in 2000 and 2002, early recognition that helped establish it within the Paris fashion calendar. Huelle's practice extends beyond his own label: he served as artistic director of the Spanish house Jesús del Pozo in 2019, designed a guest collection for Alber Elbaz's AZ Factory in 2022, and has led the fashion department at HEAD–Genève, the Geneva University of Art and Design, since 2021. The brand is a recognized member of the FHCM and sells through its own website and international stockists rather than a public retail boutique.
