Machus

Machus opened in Portland, Oregon on November 11, 2011, founded by Justin Machus, a fifth-generation retailer whose family has worked in Portland fashion retail for decades — his mother continues to run a women's clothing store, Rupert Cornelius, tracing back to a shop his grandfather opened in 1974. Before Machus, Justin had run a different Portland store, Local35, for eight years, giving him firsthand experience of the 2008 recession and the retail contraction that followed. He designed Machus to be a more tightly focused, "directional" store than Local35 had been — originally a menswear specialist, though the assortment has grown increasingly unisex over time. The shop curates emerging and independent designers rather than obvious majors, stocking labels such as Engineered Garments, Rick Owens, Arc'teryx Veilance and Naked & Famous Denim alongside a Machus private label of core cut-and-sew pieces produced in Los Angeles. Beyond clothing, the store carries accessories — bags, footwear, jewelry, sunglasses — and an apothecary section of fragrance and skincare. Machus originally operated on Burnside before relocating to a historic 1909 red-brick building at 1101 SW Alder Street in downtown Portland's West End. Justin Machus has described the store's role in terms of education and introduction, positioning small independent retailers like his as a proving ground where newer designers find their first real audience.
