What Mandarina Duck is known for
Bologna luggage and bag brand launched in 1977 by Paolo Trento, known for its colorful rubberized-canvas Utility line, a break from the all-black travel gear standard of its era.
Mandarina Duck was founded in Bologna in 1977, credited to Paolo Trento (some accounts also name Pietro Mannato as co-founder). It launched with the Utility line - lightweight, rubberized-canvas bags and backpacks in bold colors, a deliberate break from the black, boxy travel gear that dominated the category at the time. Fabric development in the brand's early years was centered near Cologno al Serio, close to Bergamo, where the distinctive rubberized canvas was developed. The colorful, design-forward approach to luggage and travel accessories drove rapid growth: by 1996 the brand operated around 68 stores worldwide. It later expanded into sunglasses, watches and fragrances, and remains headquartered in Bologna.
