What MDCI Parfums is known for
Claude Marchal’s classical patronage — bust-stoppered bottles commissioning perfumery’s finest noses.
MDCI Parfums — the initials stand for Marchal Dessins et Créations Indépendantes — was founded by Claude Marchal, who launched the house around 2006 and formally established it in 2007 after nearly a decade working inside a large international fragrance and cosmetics company. Marchal has described the project as an attempt to restore perfume to something closer to a decorative art than an industrial product, positioning himself less as a perfumer than as a curator who commissions established noses to compose each fragrance. The house's signature is its packaging: bottles topped with Italian Renaissance-style busts, a detail Marchal traces to his childhood in Alexandria, Egypt, between 1948 and 1956, where his father directed the French Lycée and his family kept a collection of antiquities. MDCI's first fragrance, Ambre Topkapi, was released in 2007. The house has never operated its own boutique; from the outset it has been sold through a small, curated network of independent niche perfumeries — among them Jovoy in Paris, Osswald in Zurich, and Luckyscent and Scent Bar in the United States — consistent with Marchal's stated preference for controlled, specialist distribution over mass retail.
