Mizubasho

Sapporo

What Mizubasho is known for

Handmade leather-bag specialist in Sapporo's Tanukikoji shopping street, part of a small Hokkaido group with sister shops in Otaru and Hakodate; works Hokkaido deerskin, cordovan and vegetable-tanned leather into bags and small goods made by local craftsmen.

Mizubasho is a Hokkaido leather-goods specialist with three shops — in Sapporo's Tanukikoji shopping street (on the second floor of the Kobushiya souvenir shop), in Otaru, and inside Hakodate's Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse. Rather than a general craft shop, it focuses specifically on handmade leather bags and small goods, built around several in-house and partner lines: an original deerskin range prized for its light, soft feel; a cordovan series made from the dense leather cut from a horse's hindquarters, prized in leathergoods for its durability; Leather Studio KAZU, a more casual Hokkaido-made line; ITAGAKI Bag's vegetable-tanned pieces, designed to develop a worn patina with use; and small handmade leather gifts under the Kawa Monogatari name. The goods are produced by Hokkaido craftsmen rather than imported, and the shops position themselves as a specialist alternative to generic souvenir stores in the same tourist districts.
