What Nam Heong is known for
Nam Heong has poured white coffee and served egg tarts from its Jalan Bandar Timah shop for decades, one of Ipoh's two founding white-coffee kopitiams. Curry noodles, char kway teow and dim sum are still cooked at the same address.
Nam Heong runs from a corner shop on Jalan Bandar Timah in Ipoh's Old Town, a spot it's held long enough that the business's own materials simply describe it as having 'been around since the beginning of time' rather than naming a date. It's named, alongside Sin Yoon Loong, as one of the two kopitiams credited with establishing Ipoh white coffee's reputation, serving what the shop itself calls a 'robust, smooth brew' with a 'slightly charred aroma' from the margarine-roasted beans behind the style. The kitchen hasn't narrowed to just coffee: dim sum, char koey teow, curry noodles, prawn noodles and buttery egg tarts with flaky shells all still come from the same address, making it a full breakfast-and-lunch stop rather than a coffee counter with snacks on the side. A second, newer and more spacious branch operates in a back lane nearby for the shop's busier hours, run alongside the original. Reviewers single out the pace of service during rushes as a point of pride for the staff, not an afterthought. For a visitor working through Ipoh's white coffee history, Nam Heong is the second half of the two-shop story that Sin Yoon Loong starts — same drink, same era, different corner of Old Town.
