What Natal Design is known for
Tokyo apparel label founded in 1999 by graphic designer Tsukada Koji, starting with printed T-shirts before growing into festival-inspired camp gear, including down jackets co-developed with sleeping-bag maker Nanga.
Natal Design was founded in 1999 by graphic designer Tsukada Koji, who started out printing his own T-shirt designs before formalizing the brand with exhibition-style presentations from 2009 onward. The label draws heavily on 1990s American casual wear and Tokyo's Harajuku youth culture, filtered through Tsukada's background in graphic design rather than traditional pattern-cutting. Its signature pieces include sarouel-style denim trousers cut with stretch fabric and oversized flap pockets, shorts finished with bird-shaped pocket details, and — through a collaboration with the Shiga-based down specialist Nanga — down jackets that pair Natal Design's silhouettes with Nanga's insulation expertise. Beyond clothing, the brand has extended into eyewear, camping chairs and canvas totes made with specialist manufacturing partners. Natal Design is based near Meiji University Station in Tokyo, where it runs its own retail shop, Scatter Brain, alongside distribution through roughly twenty wholesale partners across Japan and exhibitions and stockists reaching New York, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
